A note from Fiji about 'white culture'

[Posted to the Who Is Mark DeNome facebook page on August 22]

Hello facebook world, no offense but its been a nice week without ya. I have a number of highlights from my time 4hours into the heart of Fiji by bus, but something important I want to share with folks back home is that Fijians appreciate country music. Eyes would light up when I would say im from West Virginia, and Emma’s youngest brother played us “Country Roads” on guitar. As we drank on the porch last night and hummed along to beautiful Fijian songs, I found out the brothers knew the words to “Whiskey Lullaby” and some country songs I didnt even know. Did you know theres a song called Diane written in response to Dolly’s Jolene? So... if you choose to believe ‘white culture’ is being forgotten but havent been out of the country to see its reqch and appreciation in the furthest points in the world, then you need to take a good look at yourself. Also take a good look at other cultures who actually have a real concern that their ways are being lost to time, and are still able to celebrate their culture without hurting others. Keep choosing love, Americas! See ya soon. Next stop, New Zealand!
